What is changing in spas, 2026
Seven spa and wellness trends for 2026 that show up in the data — medical-spa convergence, hot and cold bathing, longevity programming, software and AI at the desk, men's spa demand, retreats, and the therapist shortage.
Trend lists are cheap. These seven are the ones we can see in search demand, in the network's listing data, in job postings and in the GWI numbers — with the evidence stated, so you can judge the weight yourself.
1. The med spa is the growth format
"Med spa near me" draws 110,000 US searches a month with a cost-per-click above $5; "medical spa" 135,000. Day spas add injectables and devices; med spas add massage and facials. Managing the hybrid is a different job — hence the Medical Spa Operations course and MedSpa.directory.
2. Hot and cold, in public
Hot springs (368,000 US searches), sauna near me (165,000), bathhouses, contrast therapy and Nordic spas (40,500 in Canada) are the fastest-growing spa formats by search. They sell time and space, not treatments, and their economics — admissions, capacity, energy — are closer to a pool than a spa.
3. Longevity and clinical wellness programming
Resorts are adding diagnostics, sleep and metabolic programmes with physicians on staff. Whether or not the science lands, the operations do: programme design, clinical governance and package pricing, covered in the retreat management course.
4. Software runs the desk
When people ask AI assistants about "spa management", the answers cite booking-software vendors, not schools or associations — we checked the citation data. Online booking, deposits, memberships and automated review requests are now baseline; the manager's job is choosing well and using the reports. See the software guide.
5. Men are a market
"Men's salon near me" is searched 201,000 times a month in India; "spa for men" and barber-spa hybrids grow in every market we measure. Menus, marketing and room design that assume a female guest leave money on the table.
6. Retreats and destination programmes
"Wellness retreat" 22,200 US searches; multi-day retreat demand is where Ayurveda, yoga and thermal destinations overlap. The format needs kitchen, accommodation and clinical staffing that a day spa manager has never run.
7. The therapist shortage is structural
BLS projects 15% growth in massage therapist jobs to 2034, while training pipelines shrink in several markets. Spas that train and retain — pay structures, scheduling, a career ladder — win the staffing war; the rest run at 60% capacity. That, more than any consumer trend, is why management training matters.
Questions
Where is AI in this list?
At the desk and in marketing, quietly. We have not seen evidence that guests want AI in the treatment room.
What about sustainability?
Energy in wet areas is the real cost line; we run a masterclass on it. As a marketing claim, it is table stakes rather than a trend.
