Salary websites publish precise-looking spa manager figures that are mostly self-reported and unaudited. We use government data where it exists and say plainly where it does not. The pattern is consistent across markets: therapists earn modest hourly pay plus commission and gratuities; managers earn a salary that rises sharply with the size and brand of the property.
United States (Bureau of Labor Statistics)
Massage therapists: median annual wage $57,950 (May 2024); employment projected to grow 15% from 2024 to 2034. Skincare specialists (estheticians): median $19.98 an hour (May 2024); growth 7%, about 14,500 openings a year. Sources: BLS, Massage Therapists; BLS, Skincare Specialists. BLS does not publish a separate spa manager occupation; managers fall under first-line supervisors of personal service workers.
What moves a manager's salary
Four things, in order: the property (a 200-key resort spa pays roughly double a three-room day spa for the same title); the market (Gulf and Maldives roles are tax-free and include housing); the scope (multi-outlet or regional roles); and a credential, which mainly affects whether you are shortlisted at all. Bonus structures tied to spa revenue are standard in hotel groups and rare in day spas.
Therapists and receptionists
Therapist pay is a base plus commission on services and retail; the commission and the retail habit are where the difference between a good and a poor income sits. Receptionists are paid close to hotel front-office rates. Both roles gain more from moving to a better-run spa than from negotiating in a poorly run one.
India, UK, Canada, Australia
We do not publish figures for these markets until we can cite an official series. Association members receive the network's annual salary survey once the sample is large enough to report; see the India and Canada associations.
Questions
Why no spa manager number?
Because no official statistics body publishes one, and the private figures are unaudited. We would rather be useful than precise-looking.
Does certification raise pay?
It raises the chance of being shortlisted for hotel-group roles, which pay more. It does not by itself change the salary band.
