Certified Spa Manager (CSM-ISM)
The Certified Spa Manager (CSM-ISM) credential: eligibility, the 50-question proctored exam, the code of practice, three-year renewal and the public register. Issued by the Institute of Spa Management.
Spa management has no licence. Anyone can call themselves a spa manager, and employers have no quick way to tell a trained manager from a promoted therapist. CSM-ISM is the Institute's answer: a proctored exam, a code of practice, a public register that an employer can check in ten seconds, and renewal every three years so the credential stays current.
Eligibility
Complete the Spa Management Certificate, or hold two years' documented spa management experience and pass a portfolio review. Diploma graduates are eligible for Fellow status (CSM-ISM Fellow) after two years.
The exam
Fifty multiple-choice questions across the eight certificate domains plus two scenario questions marked by faculty. 90 minutes, online, webcam-proctored, pass mark 70%. Two attempts are included in the certificate fee; further attempts are $95.
Code of practice
Certified managers sign a short code: honest description of treatments and results, consent and confidentiality, safe staffing, no discrimination in hiring or service, and fair dealing with therapists' pay. A complaint upheld against a certified manager can lead to removal from the register.
Renewal
Every three years: twelve hours of continuing education (masterclasses, the annual online conference, or approved external events) and a renewed code signature. No re-examination.
The register
Every current certificate holder is listed with name, certificate number, country and expiry. Employers and clients can verify a certificate without contacting us. Holders may display the CSM-ISM mark on their own profile on network sites such as SpasWorldwide.com.
Questions
Is CSM-ISM government-recognised?
No. It is a professional credential issued by the Institute and co-badged by the network's associations. No government licenses spa managers.
How does it compare to CIDESCO or ISPA?
CIDESCO's Beauty & Spa Management Diploma is a 300-hour academic award through accredited schools; ISPA Academy is a member resource library. CSM-ISM sits between them: a practical exam-based credential with a public register.
